The bad news is:

There will be no Beach Boogie in 2008.

The Rock Bottoms team are working hard to find a venue for 2009, but as yet have not found anywhere suitable.

So what is Beach Boogie?

Beach Boogie is a Summer dance holiday for Modern Jive and Swing dancers, taking place at Atherfield Bay Holiday Centre on the Isle of Wight. We take over the whole site which offers chalet accomodation for up to 200 people and has a huge ballroom catering comfortably for more than 250 dancers. There are workshops every day, freestyles every night, and plenty of other entertainment besides. Perhaps the best way to get a picture of Beach Boogie is to look at a  selection of photos from last year's event.

When is it?

In 2007 Beach Boogie will start on the afternoon of Friday 17th August and will continue through to the morning of Monday 27th August (bank holiday). But don't panic - you don't have to do all of this dance marathon. It will be split into 3 parts (known as Splurges) and you are welcome to attend 1, 2 or 3 Splurges.

Modern Jive or Lindy Hop?

Splurge 1: Modern Jive

17th Aug - 20th Aug (Friday afternoon through to Monday morning)

The workshops in Splurge 1 will all be aimed at Modern Jivers and will include:

Modern Jive, West Coast Swing, Blues, Aerials, and Ballroom & Latin

Freestyles will also be mainly Modern Jive music.

Splurge 2: Modern Jive and Lindy Hop

20th Aug - 24th Aug (Monday afternoon through to Friday morning)

The workshops in Splurge 2 will be aimed at Modern Jivers and Lindy Hoppers. For the Jivers they will include a similar mix to Splurge 1, and for the Lindy Hoppers there will be a course of workshops in Lindy Hop at both beginner and intermediate levels. The international Lindy teachers will be arriving for the last part of this Splurge so you will get some tuition with them on the last day or so.

Freestyles will start in separate halls with Swing music in one and Modern in the other. Then around midnight we will merge all the dancers into the main ballroom where we will play a rich mix of Modern Jive and Swing music.

Splurge 3: Lindy Hop

24th Aug - 27th Aug (Friday afternoon through to Monday morning)

The workshops in Splurge 3 will be aimed at Lindy Hoppers and will be offered at 4 levels: beginner, intermediate, inter/advance and advanced.

We will have the international teachers present for the whole of this Splurge to ensure the quality of workshops on offer can match any other UK Lindy Hop event. This will result in the price of this Splurge being slightly more than the others.

Freestyles will be pretty much all Swing music (with a bit of odd stuff here and there to liven up the party).

Kids

If you have children between the ages of 8 and 15, then you might be interested in a limited number of children's spaces for these dancers of the future. The program of dance workshops and activities with the Kids runs throughout Splurges 1 and 2 of Beach Boogie (Friday to Friday). This is very popular as the quality of the kids programme has been exceptional in recent years, so we advise you to book early. We keep numbers of kids down to 20 to improve their tuition/supervision and to minimise the effect on the rest of the camp. We are very proud of the achievements of the kids in previous years of Beach Boogie, and you will be proud too when you see them perform their cabaret at the end of the week.

Please note - our organised activities / workshops do not run all day, and when activities are not in progress your kids are your responsibility.

Who is Beach Boogie aimed at?

Any fun loving Modern Jive and Swing dancers who wish to broaden their horizons of dance, and who wish to mix with other dancers in a very sociable environment. To get the most out of Beach Boogie you need to be through your first year of Jive or Swing, but that doesn't stop brave beginners joining the fun - we do all we can to integrate dancers of all levels into the action. Every year people say how friendly Beach Boogie is, and how easy it is to meet and mx with the other dancers - this is helped significantly by the fact that we limit Beach Boogie to around 200 dancers.

Not just dancing

Evening freestyles will also be splattered with cabarets, competitions and extra fun to make each night a new experience. But most importantly, you'll get great music till you drop.

During the day, if your body can take even more activity then join in the rest of the fun and frolics making up Beach Boogie. We have an afternoon of games such as softball and things just a little bit sillier, and if the sun is shining we'll get the barbie ripping so you can picnic out on the lawn. There'll be a sandcastle competition, almost certainly a monster water fight, but to top it all - the world famous Beach Boogie "It's a Knockout" (wacky team games with lots of mess).

But it’s your holiday so if you want to laze in the sun, swim or walk along the cliff tops - go for it!

Dance Packages

The dance package includes all workshops, freestyles and other dubious entertainment). Each Splurge has been individually priced and small discounts have been given to those attending 2 or more Splurges.

Splurge 1 (3 days of Jive)                            £69

Splurge 2 (4 days of Jive and Swing)            £69

Splurge 3 (3 days of Swing)                        £89

Splurge 1 & 2 together (week of Jive)        £129

Splurge 2 & 3 together (week of Swing)    £149

Food

Breakfast and evening meals are provided in the communal dining hall, but must be booked prior to Beach Boogie as a package for the duration of your stay. We are hoping the price meals will be kept at last year's prices of £10 per day. The food package would therefore cost £30 for Splurge 1, £40 for Splurge 2 and £30 for Splurge 3.

Accommodation

The standard type of accommodation at Beach Boogie is a basic chalet with bedrooms and bathroom (no cooking facilities). There are usually 2 to 4 people to a chalet, so if you book on your own you will probably end up sharing a room. The standard price we are offering for chalet accommodation is £40 per person per Splurge. Supplements can be paid for upgraded chalets, underocccupancy of chalet, and for very posh self catering chalets.
